Year 3, Autumn 1, Week 2

Welcome to the weekly update of news in Year 3.  It has been a busy first week and a half, getting to know each other and to know the routine in Year 3 and the children have managed very well.  It was lovely to meet so many of you at Meet the Teacher but apologies if I don’t quite remember who’s who with parents yet.

We have accomplished a lot in our first few days together – discussing and writing class rules, drawing and writing pen portraits of each other for the class book and then beginning to settle into the new year’s work.

We launched our topic for this term last Thursday by looking at cave paintings and using chalk to create our own.  The children worked in teams to produce some really lovely work which now makes a great entrance to our cave (or classroom).

Our maths work at the moment is concentrating on the place value of digits within three digit numbers.  We have been using base 10 equipment to build numbers before saying, drawing and writing them then rebuilding them in different ways.

Our RE topic for the next few weeks is Homes and we have started this off by discussing what makes a house a home.  The children have written their ideas and illustrated them for a display in the classroom.

In English, we have started our writing unit of Instructions and have been looking at and labelling the features of instructions as well as practising a lot of following instructions.  As part of this, and to link with our science topic, we enjoyed a great visit to Pizza Express in Hertford where we learned a lot about making pizzas and followed instructions carefully to make our own.  I hope everyone enjoyed the pizza that they brought home for tea!
